ENC 4944 – Editorial & Professional Writing Summer Internship
This portfolio entry reflects a 120-hour internship completed through my freelance business, Plot & Paper.
The experience combined manuscript evaluation, client communication, editorial project management, website and brand development, and audience-focused content strategy. It strengthened my ability to balance professional writing, editing, and business decisions while adapting to the changing demands of freelance work.
Internship Highlights
Throughout this 120-hour internship, I balanced editorial work with the day-to-day responsibilities of running a freelance editing business. While manuscript evaluation remained the foundation of my work, the experience also emphasized the importance of client communication, project management, brand development, and audience-focused professional writing. The internship reinforced that successful editing extends beyond the manuscript itself—it also requires organization, clear communication, and thoughtful business practices.
Editorial Practice
Completed manuscript evaluations, alpha reads, and reader-response reports for independent authors, providing constructive developmental feedback tailored to each project’s goals while maintaining an encouraging and professional editorial voice.
Client Communication & Project Management
Managed client communication from initial inquiry through project completion, including scheduling, payment coordination, expectation setting, and editorial workflow management while balancing multiple active projects.
Professional Writing & Business Development
Revised website copy, refined brand messaging, and developed content strategies to better communicate the services and values of Plot & Paper. These projects strengthened my understanding of audience awareness, rhetorical decision-making, and professional communication beyond editorial work.
Strategic Growth
Reviewed website and social media analytics to evaluate audience engagement, refine communication strategies, and support long-term business development. These experiences demonstrated how editorial expertise and strategic communication work together to build a sustainable freelance business.
Featured Artifact: Redacted Editorial Feedback Letter
The following artifact is a representative sample of the developmental feedback I provided to clients during my internship. It demonstrates my ability to evaluate a manuscript from the reader’s perspective, organize observations into clear sections, and communicate constructive recommendations in a professional and encouraging tone.
To protect client confidentiality, the author’s name, manuscript title, character names, and identifying plot details have been removed. The structure and substance of the feedback remain representative of my editorial process and client-facing communication.
Reflection
Completing this internship through my own freelance business gave me a realistic understanding of what professional editing looks like beyond the manuscript itself. While editorial feedback remained the foundation of my work, I also gained experience in client communication, project management, brand development, and strategic business planning. Perhaps the biggest lesson was learning to adapt as projects shifted, timelines changed, and client needs evolved—an important reminder that freelancing requires flexibility as much as editorial expertise.
The internship also changed how I think about my future. I became more intentional about the direction of Plot & Paper, more confident in my editorial judgment, and more comfortable establishing professional boundaries when they were needed. Looking back on 120 hours of work, I leave this experience with a stronger foundation in editing, writing, and professional communication, as well as a clearer vision for building a career that brings all three together.
